With over 90 years of operational history, the post has evolved from a small veterans’ group into a cornerstone of Dodge City’s veteran community. It continues to honor the legacy of its namesake, Howard Gotschall, by fostering unity, service, and remembrance.
Howard Gotschall, a farmer
from Ford Kansas, along with Charles Ernest Scott, a business owner in Ford, were
killed near the Soissons-Rheims front during WW l when a German airplane made a direct hit
on their truck. They are both buried in Oise-Aisne
American Cemetery in Seringes-et-Nesles France.
Howard Gotschall VFW Post 1714, established in Dodge City, Kansas, in 1946, has supported veterans for nearly a century. Located at 909 N 13th Avenue since the 1950s, the post strengthens veteran camaraderie, promotes patriotism, and provides aid through services, grants, and emergency assistance.
The post also assists transient veterans with services such as gas or temporary housing and organizes community programs like fundraising breakfasts and patriotic events. Over its 90-year history, it has become a vital part of Dodge City's veteran community, continuing to honor Howard Gotschall through service and remembrance.
